Defending the Goal Line FB Dive
by Kobra
We get a lot of requests to show Goal Line FB Dive run stoppers. I want to show one using a Goal Line defense that does a pretty good job at keeping the FB from picking up much yardage.
The Goal Line defense used is the Jam Middle. Both corners play hook zones, while the FS plays the deep middle.
The Goal Line FB Dive has the FB looking to run between the center and left guard.
To set the defense up to stop the FB Dive, we take control of the FS …
… and hot route him to blitz.
Next we move the FS in the A Gap between the C and LG. Make sure he lines up closer to the WDT( he is lined up across from the LG).
Hot route the FS to blitz.
Once the ball is snapped, the LT will block the RE, the LG will block the FS, and the C will block the NT.
This allows the WDT a free shot at shooting through the gap quickly and go after the FB.
The WDT tackles the FB in the backfield before he ever gets going.
If your opponent run flips the play, not a problem.
Set the defense up the same way.
Instead of the WDT getting in the backfield, it’s the NT that will be in position to go after the FB.
In the screen shot above, you can see that the NT is not blocked.
He is able to wrap up the FB in the backfield for a loss.
Final Thoughts
Pretty simple set up that does a good job at shutting down the Goal Line FB Dive. Keep in mind this set up is designed to stop the FB Dive, so it may not stop other Goal Line plays as well.
