Play: 46 Normal- Gaps Fire
Playbook: 46
I have been working on finding a good run defense forever that does not require you to pinch the DL. After a lot of labbing against Full House and Twin TE, I have come up with a defense that can stop the FB Dive without pinching the DL. Here is the setup.
Setup:
Step 1. Re-blitz the WDT (left of center)
Step 2. Stack the blitzing MLB in the left B Gap (between the LT and LG)
Step 3. Stack the blitzing LOLB (right of screen) into the right A Gap (between the C and RG)
This is the base setup. Depending on a few things the offense may throw at us, we like to make a few adjustments.
Against Twin TE:
1. Man align (coverage audible plus right)
2. Slide the outside left DB (on the side of the twin TE's) a couple steps out to the left
This stops the toss.
Tosses and outside runs in general do not work too well when ran to the right side of the field this year. Regardless if the offense is running to the outside right side of the field, we have another adjustment to make.
1. Place the SS (hook zone by default) into a QB Contain
Against Shotgun:
1. Slide out the hook zones directly over both slot WR's or TE's
2. Call BNR
The hook zones will bump the slot WR's.
Even though you can run this defense against Shotgun formations, I do not suggest to do so reguarly. This will bring very fast pressure, but it is risky to run against Shotgun because if the offense can buy enough time, both slot WR's will be uncovered.
Final Thoughts:
You always want to control the deep FS when running this play in any situation. You also want to use the run commit and pass commit on pretty much every play to get the most of this defense. The worst thing in the world is to get beat on a play action pass because your whole defense got sucked into the RB. This can be avoided by using the pass commit. Also make sure you use the run commit properly. Always use it the side of outside runs and down on inside runs. However be careful when run committing down if the offense shows the ability to bounce inside runs to the outside with a speedy RB.
