Even though A/B Gap heat is not as nasty as it was last year, there are still plenty of ways your opponent can bring it while under center. I want to show a pass blocking tactic that allows you to have Gun Pass Protection while lining up under center.
For this breakdown, we set an under center formation as our A audible. In this case, we set the Singleback Snugs Mesh out of the Pats’ playbook.
We come out in the Gun Snugs Flip Mesh.
Notice the LT and RT are standing up while in the Gun formation.
We audible down into the Singleback Snugs Flip.
Notice that the LT and RT stay standing. We now have Gun pass protection while under center. I know what you are thinking–what’s the big deal? Well, I have noticed that some of the A/B gap blitz set-ups don’t work as well while the offense is in the Gun.
If we were to come out center with audibling down to the Singleback Snugs Flip, the defense we have set up in the screenshot above, the WDT would have gotten B gap pressure on the QB. However, because we audible down from the Gun Snugs Flip to the Singleback Snugs Flip, the LT will block to the inside and block the WDT.
This allows us on offense to counter the B Gap heat. However, the RE will get pressure from the outside since the LT blocks inside.
In the screenshot above, you can see the LT and RT block to the inside.
The LT blocks the WDT, giving us time to find the open receiver underneath.
We could have just used slide pass protection to the inside to take away the B gap pressure, but this would have had both guards and the center block to the inside. This may have caused some pass protection breakdown.
