Play: Shotgun 2 RB 3 WR- RB Circles
Playbook: Balanced
Setup:
Step 1. Hot route both outside WR's to perform curl routes
*Optional*
Step 1. Come out in Shotgun 2 RB 3 WR- RB Circles
Step 2. Audible to any play from goaline (or any other compressed set)
Now watch the outside DB's
If the immediately run over the players they are covering, then the defense is in man. If they slide out for a second both going over the players they are covering they are in zone.
Step 3. Re-set the play
Step 4. Perform your hot routes listed in the initial setup
Reads:
1. Dual RB Circle Routes
2. Dual Outside WR Curl Routes
3. Slot WR Streak Route
The optional steps basically give you the read of the defense so you know if they are in man or zone. This makes it very easy to know who will most likely be open once the play begins.
The RB circle routes found in this play are absolutely deadly. They will shred any zone defense to death. All you need to do is throw a bullet pass with no pass lead as soon as they begin to cut upfield.
The outside WR's curl routes kill man to man coverage. When they turn around, throw a bullet with pass lead up. Then click onto the WR, and hold catch and down and to the inside to rocket catch the pass. The DB's will continue to run backwards giving you an easy completion.
The angled slot streak does a very good job of attacking the seams. I like to hit it down the seams with a pass lead up and to the left against cover 2. You can also rocket catch it with pass lead down.
Final Thoughts:
The only downside to this play is it is only found in the balanced playbook. I have looked extensively in other playbooks to find these RB routes in other plays and formations and they simply do not exist. There are a few plays that have similar routes but they are just not as effective as the routes found it this play when it comes down to it. Also, you have both RB's running this route on this play which makes it even more deadly. With everyone running zone this year, this play is good enough to switch playbooks for.
